Growing up I spent a lot of time on construction sites. My father is a general contractor and my sisters and I worked weekends and summers on various building projects, including building our family home. This experience gave me a solid introduction to the building process, and a respect for all the hard work behind the finished product. In college I discovered I enjoyed science and went on to earn a PhD in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. Science is a field defined by the rigorous accounting and execution of small details, but also requires a creative mind to shape these details into something novel. As a Research Scientist for a biotech company in California, I spent over 20 years practicing and honing these arts. During this time, I also took on a handful of remodeling projects. Using the experience gained when I was younger, I worked with both builders and architects to achieve my families’ design vision. These projects ranged from the conversion of a balcony into a walk-in closet, to an over 500 sq ft second story master suite addition. I enjoyed the process of applying my knowledge, combining it with input from my family, and then working with the builder to achieve something we were all happy with. A move from California to Fayetteville, Georgia allowed me an opportunity to assess what I was passionate about. As a scientist I endeavored to create things that could make people’s lives better, but I did not get to build a relationship with these people, or work with them to help them achieve their goals. This is the part that has drawn me to home design. The design process combines both the detail oriented, creative work I love with the collaborative, interactive process of helping someone realize their vision.
